The park is part of the Virunga Conservation Area and covers more than 125 km².PNV is home of five Virunga volcanoes: Sabyinyo (3.674 m), Gahinga (3.474 m), Bisoke (3711 m), Muhabura (4.127 m), and the Karisimbi, the highest volcano with an altitude of 4.507 m. All five volcanoes on the Rwandan side are extinct.
The parks most famous inhabitants, the mountain gorillas spend most of their time in the hagenia woodlands and bamboo forests (1800-3300m). During the raing season when new bamboo shoots are growing, the gorillas spend more time foraging in the bamboo forests (base altitude). A trek to the natural habitat of bamboo forest and Hagenia woodlands offers fantastic views over the surrounding area. The PNV became more famous with Dian Fossey’s research into the behaviour of the mountain gorillas, with her base at the Karisoke Research Centre for over 18 years. (She tragically died on the 26th of December 1985). A visit to Dian Fossey’s memorial can also be arranged with a gorilla trek in the PNV. Ib’Iwacu Village is located on the edge of Volcanoes NP and the local community displays the traditional ways of living, traditional dances and songs, local fire making, visit to the king’s house replica, Batwa shooting arrows, Traditional healer, grinding millet on traditional stones, banana beer making experience and many more.
* Kinigi Guest House is adjacent to the Volcanoes National Park and closest to the meeting point for many of the gorilla treks.
*Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is positioned in the foothills of the Virunga’s, a chain of 15,000ft volcanoes stretching through Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The lodge itself is set approximately 1km from the Park boundary on the gentle foothills of Sabyinyo, one of the most impressive of the five volcanoes visible from the site.
*Mountain Gorilla View Lodge is located in Kinigi at the base of Mt. Sabinyo, the Virunga Mountains range. The lodge is located amid forest approx. 2km west of the Kinigi Park Headquarters.
*Le bambou Gorilla Lodge is situated in Northern Province of Rwanda, close to the endangered gorillas in their natural environment.
*Virunga Lodge lies set on a stunning hillside with breathtaking views of the Virunga volcanoes. Below, lays a patchwork of farmland and the beautiful Lakes, Ruhondo and Bulera.
Golden monkey tracking
Not only gorillas but also other primates species such as the golden monkey shall be tracked out in case you take a trip to this park. Golden monkeys are the most elusive and beautiful monkeys in the world.
The Park also gives visitors an opportunity to climb mountains especially those who are physically fit mountains such as Kalisimbi, Sabyinyo, Muhabura, Gahinga and Bisoke. It can take one to two days to climb one of these Virunga Mountain. Perhaps it’s regarded as one of the most exciting and memorable experience on earth, finding your self at the top of the mountain is thus breathtaking and it needs one not to miss visiting this wonderful park in the East and Central Africa.
Visiting Dian Fossy Tombs:
This is another activity thought of in case one takes a visit at Volcanoes National Park. Dian Fossy was a prominent researcher who carried out research on the life and behaviors of gorillas for a period of a bout 18 years, and she was against the massive killing of gorillas by the poachers, although her works was made to an end she still respected in the history of Rwanda. She was murdered by the poachers who where against her works.
